Vegan Calculator Measures Lives & Resources Saved on a Plant-Based Diet
Ever wonder what kind of impact you’re making as a vegan? Most vegans do — particularly when dealing with doomsdayers who believe nothing will ever get better.
Now, there’s a mathematical way to find out how your diet is affecting the world. The Vegan Calculator is a new online tool that takes the length of time you’ve been vegan and quantifies how much water, grain, forest, Co2 and animals’ lives you’ve saved.
The calculator was created by Luke Dowding, aka “The Vegan Web Designer.” Dowding became vegan thanks to the influence of his parter — a former vegetarian turned vegan. Now, the two are dedicated to the cause together.
After watching the documentary Cowspiracy and viewing their statistics, I was interested in finding out what my impact was as a vegan,” Dowding tells Latest Vegan News. “That inspired me to create a way for all vegans (or potential vegans) to calculate just how much of an impact they could make by eliminating meat and dairy from their diet.”
Once he had the idea for the calculator, Dowding started mocking up some designs in Photoshop. “It’s much easier to code a website when you know what it looks like before hand, like a puzzle,” he says.
Then, he built the calculator using HTML, CSS and JavaScript. “HTML for the content and structure, CSS for the styling, design and responsive behavior and finally JavaScript which runs the calculations once you hit that big pink calculator button.”
