U.S. Dietary Report Recommends Veg Diet

It’s official, an arm of the U.S. government is taking a stance on eating plants. The Scientific Report of the 2015 U.S. Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee, released last week, is making news by calling for a diet higher in fruits and vegetables and lower in animal products.

The whopping 500+ page report states: “Consistent evidence indicates that, in general, a dietary pattern that is higher in plant-based foods, such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, and lower in animal-based foods is more health promoting and is associated with lesser environmental impact (GHG emissions and energy, land, and water use) than is the current average U.S. diet.” In conclusion: more plants, fewer animals.

The doc discusses the chronic disease epidemic and need to consider environmental concerns as an important factor when advocating for dietary guidelines. Well, YEAH.

The report doesn’t go to extremes, however — it still promotes fish and dairy products. Nonetheless, this is progress, and we’ll take it!
