Plant-Based Doctor Directory Lists Vegan Practitioners Across the Country
As the plant-based movement grows, more and more people are seeking practitioners who understand the importance of lifestyle and nutrition when it comes to healthcare. Too many mainstream doctors aren’t educated on the latest research, much less open-minded towards alternative opinions.
But now, thanks to PlantBasedDoctors.org, you can find a practitioner who’s on board with your lifestyle.
The site is a free directory created by popular blogger Happy Herbivore (aka Lindsay Nixon), Meal Mentor and Don’t Lose the Cow. Current featured practitioners include John McDougall, Barnard Medical Center, Michael Greger and Gabriel Cousens.
“Last September I took to Facebook and asked my fans to list any doctors or medical professionals they knew that were supportive of the plant-based diet or were plant-based or vegan themselves,” explained Nixon to Latest Vegan News. “Many people left the names of their doctors or other practitioners, and many doctors themselves wrote in. I compiled an international list based on their responses and shared it in a blog post.”
After she posted the list, Nixon’s friends at Forks Over Knives shared it, and lots of people wrote in asking to be added. She’s been updating the list in a Google spreadsheet ever since.
“A few months back, Matt Jager emailed me and asked if he could use the information I’d collected and create a website database for it,” says Nixon of how the website came to be. “He’s generously been using his time and passion to build it ever since, and released the website this week. I hope this website will help people following a plant-based diet or vegan lifestyle find medical professionals that are supportive of their lifestyle as well as bring business to doctors and other practitioners who are in our community and are pushing peas instead of pills.”
You can check out the full database at PlantBasedDoctors.org, and submissions are welcome online.

Thanks for helping us get the word out about the site!
Can someone clarify whether these doctors are vegan themselves or do they just support a vegan lifestyle? I remember when this list was compiled she noted either way and on this website I’m not seeing it … Would be nice if you could search by that or it was under there name 🙂
This is epic! What a major step towards further “mainstreaming” the vegan lifestyle. A brilliant article.
Thanks Darina! 🙂 So happy this concept finally exists. It’s genius!
I’m so very happy to have this list!! Thank you!
I don’t understand why there are Drs on the list who don’t live a vegan or plant-based life. I found one in my area, clicked on profile, and read that he enjoys bacon. hmmmmm
Hi Kitty,
According to Happy Herbivore, the list does include both doctors who live an exclusively plant-based lifestyle, as well as those who just recommend it. The site doesn’t make a distinction, but in her original spreadsheet (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/t4IMCk62mL84IEETwbVxtPg/htmlview), there are notes that talk about the doctors’ diets. Hope that helps.

is there a list for Ontario, Canada?..thanks
I’m looking too!!
Gabriel Cousens lost his license to practise as a physician, and his disciplinary record leads me to ask why he’s at the top of this list.
From Phoenix New Times on Gabriel Cousens:
“Cousens told him [a deceased patient whose family is suing him] that injections of cow adrenaline and/or sheep DNA could energize his body. Levy agreed to five injections, which aren’t a homeopathic treatment but are allowed by Arizona’s homeopathic board.
Unfortunately, the injection site — on Levy’s right buttock — grew infected, so he went to see Cousens about it. Cousens didn’t recommend an antibiotic. Instead, he treated the growing abscess with acupuncture and massage.
The infected area became green and black. It spread down Levy’s thigh, and on March 1, 1998, Levy did not wake up in his dorm room at the Tree of Life Spa. Cousens found Levy unconscious and attempted CPR, with no success.
Cousens did not call 911. Instead, he called an air ambulance, and arranged for a helicopter pickup on the football field of a nearby high school.”

Hi Ian,
I would definitely recommend reaching out to the folks at PlantBasedDoctors.org with your concerns, as they’re the ones managing that list. They may not be aware of the issues you’re talking about. http://www.plantbaseddoctors.org/contact
