Pamela Anderson is nothing if not devoted to the well-being of animals. A long-term vegan and activist, the actress and model has lent her voice and image to countless campaigns for PETA and other advocacy groups.
Now, thanks to her passion for the cause, she’s headed to an Arizona jail; not as an inmate, but as waitstaff. Anderson, along with Sheriff Joe Arpaio, will spend Wednesday afternoon helping Maricopa County Jail prisoners prepare and serve a veg lunch.
The Phoenix correctional facility, which holds 8,300 inmates, is the county’s first all-vegetarian jail, and according to PETA, its move to eliminate meat has saved local taxpayers more than $200,000 a year.
“When other jails and prisons see how dropping meat boosts the health of inmates while saving taxpayers money, I think they’ll consider adopting the policy,” said Sheriff Arpaio in a PETA press release.
Anderson and PETA Senior Vice President Dan Mathews will use the appearance to talk about Phoenix as a model for other jails across the country. In addition to jails, PETA has helped “veganize” menus at universities, corporations, and sports arenas across the country.
Institutions are a powerful way to spread the word, considering the massive quantities of food they serve. This is an amazing first step towards a more vegan-friendly world.
