It’s time we redefined what it means to be a man, and that’s what Compassionate Man magazine is all about.
The digital publication, which launched a few months back, is dedicated to showcasing inspirational, positive messaging about living a compassionate lifestyle.
“For years I wondered how I could make the biggest impact for animals,” says founder and publisher Nick Coughlin. “What were my interests and skills? What unique perspective did I have?”
He noticed that most advocacy efforts were directed towards young women. And admittedly, the majority of vegans are women; but why alienate or ignore half of the world’s population, Coughlin wondered.
“I felt I could help support and inspire other compassionate guys to speak up. I want men to embrace compassion with pride, to be inspired to use their own voice to help animals. I didn’t see anyone else out there working from that angle.”
So far, cover stars have included Gene Baur, Nathan Runkle, and Bob Barker.
“These are all guys who I think we can learn from,” says Coughlin. “We can find inspiration in their stories and in the fact that they have worked so hard to speak up for those who can’t speak for themselves.”
As far as content, this month’s issue features stories like “What’s the Point of Keeping A Hen Who Cannot Lay Eggs?”, “He’s Vegan, She’s Not: Dealing With a Mixed Relationship,” and “Change Your Story to Change Your Life.”
“I want to make sure each issue has a good variety of content that appeals to both men and women, with topics that range from feature interviews to food, health and nutrition, exercise tips, relationships, travel, and self-improvement,” Coughlin explains.
“I want Compassionate Man to serve as a resource for men who love animals but haven’t felt the support they need to express those feelings or get involved in a more meaningful way. My primary goal, however, is to reach people who aren’t already on board with these ideas,”
Someday, Coughlin wants to see Compassionate Man sitting alongside GQ and Men’s Journal.
“I want to awaken a spirit of consciousness, compassion and kindness that exists in all of us, whether or not we’ve given any thought to the way we treat others.”
