New Campaign Lobbies Feds to Add More Plants to Dietary Guidelines
By now, most news-savvy Americans have heard that the government’s dietary guidelines advisory committee is on board with a veg diet. The committee’s report broke in February, and was such a ground-breaker that it made the homepage of the Huffington Post last week—major mainstream coverage.
Unfortunately, the report is only a recommendation, meaning, the USDA doesn’t have to opt in. When USDA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) releases the new guidelines later this year, they could choose to ignore the evidence—and very well might, given the massive power the meat and dairy industries wield over our federal agencies.
The good news is, you can make your voice heard via My Plate, My Planet, a new advocacy organization designed to support the committee’s sustainability suggestions.
(My Plate, incidentally, is what replaced the Food Pyramid back in 2010.)
My Plate, My Planet is comprised of more than 100 environmental organizations and experts including Food Choice Task Force, Friends of the Earth, Center for Biological Diversity, Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future, Factory Farming Awareness Coalition, Slow Food USA and tons of others.
The group has John Hancock’d an open letter to the USDA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and it’s spearheading a national campaign to raise awareness about this crucial issue.
Despite how it might appear, this IS a democracy, and citizens have the right to express their opinions. Do you want to see the dietary guidelines more vegan-friendly? Speak up and let the powers that be know that a plant-based My Plate is the way to go.
