New Brand Aims to Be the First Vegan, Sustainably Sourced Fashion Line Available in Stores Nationwide
Everyone knows fast fashion is a problem. Much like drive-through burgers and styrofoam to-go containers, we all know it’s bad news … but it’s hard to avoid when more ethical alternatives are expensive and inaccessible for so many.
Enter Legends & Vibes, a new fashion brand that’s aiming to change the game when it comes to fabulous gear that leaves your conscience clean and you lookin’ like the ultimate (vegan) snack.
Some threads from the brand are already available at Vegan Scene (a super-chic boutique in Venice, Calif. that I’m kind of obsessed with), but via Kickstarter, it’s looking to raise $55K in order to bring a new line into stores nationwide. The founder, Amy Rebecca Wilde, has been vegan for the animals since 2002.
Besides the fact that the clothes are GORGEOUS, the brand is notable in many other respects: It’s vegan, locally made, ethically produced, women run, and sustainably sourced.
“In 2014 I founded Vegan Scene, Los Angeles’ first 100% vegan fashion boutique,” says Wilde. “Style and presentation were just as important as ethics. However, as a boutique, we struggled to find vegan fashion to carry that not only met our ethics but was also affordable. If consumers cannot find or afford vegan fashion, what’s the point? I immediately understood that we needed to design our own line. That’s how Legends & Vibes was born.”
If you’re wondering what materials they use, it’s not as simple as “faux fur” that could be sourced from, um, anywhere. The team uses natural (plant) fibers, organic cotton, cellulosic fibers, regenerated cellulosic fibers, and deadstock — excess fabric from mills and factories.
It’s a closed loop process, meaning “circular fashion where new becomes old and nothing is discarded.” Win for the animals. Win for the people. Win for the environment.
“My goal is to sustainably scale Legends & Vibes to be available in retailers nationwide while staying true to our ethics,” Wilde explains. “Sustainable scaling is referring to both our growth as a business and our environmental practices. I’m in this for the long run, so I want to make sure that we build a strong foundation that is socially responsible and will last.”
As far as where you’ll be able to find Legends & Vibes, Wilde says they’re looking to find a mix of small local boutiques and big-box retailers that care about social responsibility and conscious consumerism.
You can read EVERYTHING about the brand’s mission, production efforts, background, priorities, pics, and more on the Kickstarter page. And you totally should, ‘cuz it’s fascinating! And donate, if you can!
