On Man v. Food, Adam Richman ate some appalling meals. A 72-ounce sirloin steak, a seven-pound breakfast burrito and a 12-egg omelette, among them.
Hosting the prodigious program took its toll, and Richman’s weight spiked both during the show and after it went off the air six years ago.
Since the show ended, Richman has slimmed down significantly, and in recent months, Richman has adopted a plant-based lifestyle.
“I’ve been vegan for the past three months,” he said on London Live. He makes the switch periodically, and also went completely vegan when he participated in Soccer Aid, he told the news outlet.
He’s even been sharing photos of vegan eats via his Twitter feed.
“Adam Richman Goes Vegan” is probably not a headline you’d expect from the man who once ate an entire pizza.
Richman also says he respects animals, whether “he eats them or otherwise.”
“I’ve never owned a pet that I didn’t adopt. I mean, literally, I adopted pets that were from my Kindergarten that they were going to get rid of. Every pet I’ve ever owned has come from a shelter, so I’ve always done that,” he told London Live.
Can we say Adam Richman is vegan for life? Not so much. He also told London Live: “Now does that mean I’m not going to have a steak? No I absolutely will when I want to, but it’s just about picking and choosing my spots, and when I want to have that cow and I wanna have that bacon, I’m going to make it count, I’m going to make it great quality.”
However, even adopting a partially plant-based lifestyle and opting into veganism periodically is a HUGE step forward.
Man Finds Food, Richman’s new project, focuses on finding hidden restaurants—rather than eating his way to heart disease. The show actually faced a year-long delay after Richman caused major controversy by using the hashtag #thinspiration, a term popular in pro-eating disorder circles. He’s since apologized, saying he had no idea of the word’s connotations, and his new show just hit the airwaves in the UK.
All in all, if the man who ate a yard-long bratwurst could adopt a vegan lifestyle, there’s definitely hope for the rest of the world.
