London Restaurant Drops Foie Gras from Menu After Protests by Vegan Activists

Thanks to the insistence of a vegan activism group, one London restaurant is saying so long to foie gras.

Gauthier, a classical French eatery in London’s Soho district, removed the item from the menu this week after the London Vegan Action Group held three protests, reports the London Evening Standard. Solid proof that activism is effective.

The infamous dish involves force-feeding a duck or goose with a feeding tube in order to fatten the liver. It’s banned in Israel (and California, though there’s an ongoing court battle over the issue), with several other countries and regions working towards its elimination.

Chef Alexis Gauthier, the restaurant’s namesake, told the Standard he chose to stop eating foie gras a long time ago because he “didn’t believe in it”.

“I never really totally removed it from my menu—being a French restaurant and classically trained. I did it for myself but didn’t do it for my customers.”

Times have changed, however, and the protesters were enough impetus to get him to eliminate it altogether.

“We are in 2015, cruelty to animals for pleasure and the palate—it is not necessary. It is going to take a while but ultimately nobody will be using it.”

Amen to that.
