Kevin Schuder Wins Vegan Iron Chef Competition
Congrats are in order for Chef Kevin Schuder! The Iron Chef extraordinaire took home top honors in last night’s Vegan Iron Chef Competition. The San Francisco-based throwdown was fierce as plant-based culinarians went head-to-head for three full rounds.
A pro chef who works in the Bay Area, Schuder’s first gig ever was at the famed Millennium Restaurant. Now, he’s hard at work for the soon-to-open Citizen Fox.
So who were the other contenders?
Bijal Lathia, Home Chef and winner of last year’s Sammich Throwdown; Charlie Fields, Home Chef and accountant and Maria Clementi, Pro Chef and runner up of Sammich Throwdown.
The contest’s three rounds went as follows: first, Chef Bijal vs Pro Chef Maria, then Home Chef Charlie vs Pro Chef Kevin, followed by the two winners of each battling it out in a grand finale.
According to Twitter accounts, the first round was tacos, followed by sushi, followed by spring rolls. The overall theme was handheld foods.
Judges included Lacey McGarry from Field Roast Grain Meat, Kristin Lajeunesse of Will Travel for Vegan Food and Colleen Holland of VegNews, and clearly they liked what they saw ate from Schuder. The talented winner got to head home with a Blendtec blender, which has to come in handy. The event itself was produced by Karine Brighten Events, so keep an eye out for next year’s installment.
