JL Fields, Kristin Lajeunesse, Southern Fried Vegan & More at NOLA Veggie Fest This Weekend
New Orleans is known for a lot of things, but vegan cuisine isn’t usually at the top of the list. There’s more to the Big Easy than crawfish and po’ boys, however, and the city’s of array meatless eats will be on display at this weekend’s NOLA Veggie Fest.
The two-day affair will feature cooking demos, product samples, vendor booths, a silent auction, cruelty-free fashion, kid’s activities and much more. The fest dates back to 1990, when its first incarnation hit downtown New Orleans.
This year, Southern Fried Vegan, Naturally N’awlins Cuisine, Mercy for Animals, Follow Your Heart, Go Max Go Foods and lots of other brands and organizations will be on hand, educating crowds and doling out goodies.
Cooking demos and lessons are in the lineup and will include things like jackfruit curry, garbanzo crab cakes, Mardi Gras rice and beginning knife skills.
As far as speakers, attendees will hear from vegan lifestyle coach and chef JL Fields; author and Will Travel for Vegan Food founder Kristin Lajeunesse (whose cookbook just dropped!) and New Orleans native and vegan chef Amina Dada, among others.
The event is a project of the Humane Society of Louisiana, and all proceeds benefit its good works. Volunteers from the city’s 700-strong New Orleans Vegetarian Meetup Group help run the annual shindig.
The event runs Saturday (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m. to 6 p.m.) at the New Orleans Healing Center. Tickets are $10 each for a one-day pass, $15 each for a weekend pass and can be purchased online.
