First-Ever Vegan Brussels Sprouts Battle Kicks Off in NYC This Month

shutterstock_334603289At one time, it seemed that the sole purpose of Brussels sprouts was to terrify small children at the dinner table. Clearly, the cruciferous vegetable was plagued with bad PR.

Lucky for all of us, they’ve made a major comeback in recent years, and chefs everywhere are utilizing the mini cabbages in creative ways. And while bacon gets in the mix all too often, no animal products will be allowed at the first-ever Battle of Brussels in NYC on February 29th.

The vegan Brussels sprouts battle is being put on by U.S. Veg Corp, and entrants will include: Shoshana Frishberg-Izzo of Brooklyn Rose making Brussels sprouts cake; Rachel Shamah of Brooklyn Whatever making “shpickles”; and Tere Fox of Rockin Raw making *Señor Lima Brussels*, among others. Eight chefs will be competing, and three expert judges will pick a winner. The audience will also get to weigh in with the People’s Choice Award for Best Brussels in NYC.

The Battle of Brussels marks Veg Corp’s fourth vegan cooking competition in the last several months. The org also hosted a burger battle, a taco competition, and a mac and cheese throwdown.

“We put them on as a collaboration with the brand new V Spot Organic, which opened up in Manhattan’s East Village last summer,” says Sarah Gross, co-founder of U.S. Veg Corp. “When they opened up their new (HUGE, by NYC standards) location, they came to us to help create an event series that would bring in the crowds.”

If you live in fear of Brussels sprouts, this event may be the time to give this leafy veggie another chance.

“Brussels sprouts are the kind of veggie that you can make or break depending on preparation,” says Gross. “Give those babies a good roasting, a few seasonings, and you won’t have had a better veggie experience! It doesn’t take much to let them shine.”

The event starts at 7 p.m. on Monday, February 29 at V Spot Organic, 12 St Marks Pl., NYC. Tickets are $37.92–$59.02 and can be purchased online.
