James Mouritsen, former owner of Union Street Eats (a Salt Lake City food cart that served vegetarian, Mexican-inspired food) is offering up his cart through a contest.
Participants need to submit a 500-word essay and an entry fee of $40 by September 29th for a chance to win the cart. (A couple recently hosted a similar contest to find a new owner for their Illinois restaurant.)
Based on the winning essay, the cart will change hands, and the champ can create a brand new, plant-based vision.
“My inspiration in sponsoring the competition is to inspire a lot of creative thought about what can be on a vegan food cart menu, and how some smart vegan food lovers can make it reality,” he tells Latest Vegan News. “While only one winner can take over my food cart, I hope that a handful of savvy entrepreneurs will be inspired to take a big step toward their dreams of vegan food biz success.”
“The judges will be looking for well-thought out vision of street food success — realizing that 500 words is just a summary of a real business plan — about how the winner will take the cart and add in the time and money and vision needed to make it popular on the streets of some American city,”Mouritsen explains.
As far as tips for potential entrants: “The essay can talk a bit about food choices and menu ideas, as well as touching on either a business model catering to special events, or else a plan built around setting it up for weekday lunches on a downtown location where it is permitted, but it should show that the entrant has thought a bit about the various ways to make successful business choices with running a food cart, as well as some of the costs and challenges involved in the fairly low-overhead food cart biz.”
The competition is open for entries through Sep. 29th. Details, rules, the entry form and pictures of the cart are available at www.winaveganfoodcart.yolasite.com.
