Driftwood Magazine to Showcase Vegan Culture, Travel

While a vegan lifestyle may be garnering more coverage in the mainstream media, there’s still not a lot of exclusive content devoted to plant-based living. But Driftwood, a start-up print publication, is looking to change that through stunning visual imagery and compelling articles on (gasp!) actual paper (and high quality paper at that).

The magazine is the brainchild of journalist and photographer Holly Feral. Based out of Portland, Ore., Feral, Michele Truty (Managing Editor) and Jade Sturms (Art Director) are forging ahead with a Kickstarter campaign. They’re looking to raise $25,000 to fund the unique, cutting-edge publication.

“We think that Driftwood is going to appeal to a large audience of vegans who want more from a magazine than the introductory content,” Feral adds. “A lot of energy is spent on helping people transition into veganism, and with good reason. However, with a growing demographic of over seven million vegans in the United States alone, there needs to be something on the other side of the gate that follows the growth of vegan industries and connects us to communities around the world.”

The vegan culture magazine will be more of a collector’s item than the usual throwaways seen in grocery store aisles, so Feral may well have read this to find out about one of her options when it came to someone who could print the high-quality publication. The first issue is slated for 112 pages, and articles, contributed by writers across the globe, will run the gamut from “Vegan Ink: It’s Newer than You Think” to “Team Upton’s: Creating a Vegan Powerhouse in Chicago.”

Driftwood already has a growing social media presence. Its “Vegan Faces” series has highlighted more than 100 vegans from nine countries-including a vegan cat.

Feral is so committed to the cause, she even got inked with a Driftwood tattoo.

“My Driftwood tattoo is absolutely my favorite. All of my five tattoos are place markers for huge chapter changes in my life. Driftwood marks the beginning of the chapter when I start living the dream I’ve had since I was a child; living in a way that uses my passion for storytelling and travel to leave the world better than I found it,” she explains. “Plus, the tattoo is the first I’ve had at a vegan tattoo shop, the first vegan tattoo shop in fact. I love everything that it represents.”

Feral and team are looking to raise $25,000, via a Kickstarter campaign, to help fund the magazine’s production. Primarily a subscription drive for the print and digital editions of the mag, the campaign also offers a bunch of perks for different donation levels including invites to Driftwood parties, t-shirts, advertising and more.

With eight days to go, they’ve raised $11,124 of their $25,000 goal via 128 supporters. The team needs to hit their numbers to make the magazine happen, so every backer is hugely appreciated.

With Driftwood’s travel-focus, Feral thinks people will be surprised to find that there are strong vegan communities worldwide.

“Many people are afraid to travel or believe they’ll have to leave their vegan lifestyle at home. The truth is that veganism is not an idea unique to this time and place,” she explains. “It has roots throughout history in every civilization. We want to expose that rich heritage.”
